Today I went to Eywitness to take part in a usability test of Reed Elsevier website. They gave me a few senarios, each consisted of a few tasks and demanded me to fulfill them while thinking aloud. راهنمای تهیه پرسشنامه اینترنتی، فرانت پیج، راه ساده تر

با استفاده از فرانت پیج به سادگی می توان ترتیبی داد که پاسخها به محقق ایمیل شوند و یا اینکه در قالب یک فایل ذخیره شوند و یا اینکه در یک بانک اطلاعاتی Access ذخیره گردند.

برای اینکار پس از اینکه کار طراحی صفحه پرسشنامه خود را با استفاده از فرانت پیج به پایان بردید، می توانید مراحل زیر را طی کنید:

1. بر روی گزینه submit راست کلیک کنید

2. گزینه form properties را انتخاب کنید که پنجره ای با همین نام مشاهده خواهید کرد.

3. اکنون می توانید شیوه مورد نظر خود را انتخاب کنید. اگر میخواهید پاسخ های هر پاسخ دهنده را جداگانه از طریق ایمیل دریافت کنید گزینه و سپس را انتخاب کنید و آدرس ایمیل مورد نظر خود را در کادر بنویسد و اگر اسم فایلی درون گرینه file name می بینید آنرا پاک کنید. و سپس Ok کنید. اگر می خواهید پاسخ ها در یک فایل متنی ساده با پسوند CSV ذخیره شوند. نامی برای فایل مورد نظر خود انتخاب و داخل گزینه file name بنویسید. این نوع فایل ها برای تحلیل داده ها مناسب هستند واطلاعات آنها می تواند به راحتی به Excl یا SPSS منتقل شود. اگر می خواهید پاسخ ها را در یک بانک اطلاعاتی ذخیره کنید گزینه send to database را انتخاب کنید سپس روی علامت options کلیک کنید و در پنجره جدید گرینه create a database را انتخاب کنید. فرانت پیج به صورت خودکار یک بان اطلاعاتی Access برای شما ایجاد خواهد کرد که حاوی فیلدهای با اسامی فیلدهای پرسشنامه شماست. پس از Ok کردن. فایل پرسشنامه را ذخیره کنید. این فایل قاعدتا دارای پسوند html خواهد بود. این پسوند را به asp تغییر دهید.

4. سپس باید فایل asp پرسشنامه و بانک یا فایل ایجاد شده توسط فرانت پیج را روی سرور قرار دهید.

نکته. سرور شما باید پشتیبان فایلهای asp و Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions باشد.

زمانی که صفحه وب پرسشنامه را با فرانت پیج ایجاد می کنید، آنرا در داخل پوشه my webs در my documents خود ایجاد کنید تا با پیغام خطای فرانت پیج مواجه نشوید. فایل پاسخ ها یا بانک اطلاعاتی بر روی وب باید داری ویژگی writable باشند.

فراموش نکید که آدرس فایلها و پوشه ها باید به همان ترتیبی باشد که فرانت پیج تعیین کرده.

هممانطور که دوستمان در نوشته های قبلی اشاره کرد پرسشنامه های اینترنتی کاربردهای فراوان در حوزه های مختلف تحقیقاتی پیدا کرده اند. راه ساده انجام آنها تهیه پرسشنامه به صورت یک فایل word و ارسال آن به عنوان ضمیمه ایمیل است. پاسخ دهندگان می توانند پاسخهای خود را با تایپ کردن (در مورد سئوالات باز) و یا با پررنگ یا زیرخط دار کردن در مورد سئوالات بسته به فایل اضافه کنند و آنرا با ایمیل به محقق باز گردانند. این شیوه اگر چه به سادگی قابل اجراست و به دانش فنی چندانی نیاز ندارد اما بسیار ناکارآمد است و به هیچوجه توصیه نمی شود.

شیوه دیگر تهیه پرسشنامه به صورت یک صفحه وب و قراردادن آن بر روی اینترنت است که پاسخ دهندگان می توانند به صورت آنلاین به پرسشنامه پاسخ دهند.

برای تهیه این نوع پرسشنامه تحت وب ابزارها و مهارتهایی لازم است.

1. توانایی طراحی صفحه وب با استفاده از کدهای زبان html یا استفاده از یکی از نرم افزارهایی که برای طراحی صفحات وب واسطه گرافیکی کاربر پسند فراهم می کنند نظیر FrontPage یا Dreamweaver

2. دسترسی به یک سرور اینترنت که بتوان صفحه وب پرسشنامه را بر روی آن بارگذاری کرد. این سرور باید از برخی خدمات خاص پشتیبانی کند مثلا یا پشتیبان اسکریپت هایی نظیر PHPیا CGI باشد و یا اینکه از صفحات موسوم به ASP یا Active Server Page و Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions پشتیبانی کند.

3. گاه قدری مهارت برنامه نویسی با یکی از فناوریهای اینترنتی فوق نیز ضروری است.

طراحی صفحه وب به خودی خود کار مشکلی نیست. مسئله اصلی تدارک شیوه ای برای دریافت و ذخیره پاسخ هاست. زمانی که پاسخگو روی علامت Submit تقه می زند باید پاسخ های وی دریافت شده و با نظم مشخصی آرایش شده و در جایی مثلا یک فایل یا یک بانک اطلاعاتی ذخیره شوند و یا اینکه به عنوان مثال از طریق ایمیل به محقق ارسال شوند. این کار به طرق مختلف امکان پذیر است. که در مورد آن خواهم نوشت.

در سمیناری که امروز شرکت نمودم سخنران میگفت در استرالیا فقط بیست و پنج درصد از دانشجویان دکترا موفق به فارغ التحصیلی میشوند. البته من در صحت این آمار شک دارم اما واقعیت این است که آنقدر که درس خواندن و مدرک گرفتن در مملکت ما ارزش محسوب میشود، در استرالیا یافتن شغل و کسب درآمد اهمیت دارد و به همین دلیل به محض اینکه شغل نان و آب داری پیدا میکنند عطای مدرک را به لقایش می بخشند.

مشکلات مربوط به استفاده از پرسشنامه تحت وب

از آنجا که دسترسی به این نوع پرسشنامه ها مستلزم دسترسی به اینترنت است محقق پاسخگویان بالقوه ای را از دست خواهد داد و ممکن است جامعه پاسخگو به پرسشنامه اینترنتی، نماینده کل جامعه مورد مطالعه نباشد

مسأله تعیین میزان (درصد) پاسخگویی: معمولا" در نتایج تحقیق عنوان میشود که چه درصدی از جامعه مورد مطالعه به پرسشنامه پاسخ داده اند . در پرسشنامه های اینترنتی تعیین میزان پاسخگویی مشکل است و به همین دلیل معمولا" فقط تعداد پاسخها اعلام میشود. دو مشکلی که نگارنده با آن برخورد نمود یکی اینکه فقط برخی از فهرستهای پستی و گروههای مباحثه تعداد اعضا (مشترکین) خود را ذکر میکنند. در بقیه موارد باید با گرداننده این فهرستها و گروهها تماس گرفته و سوال نمایید که در همه موارد نیز جوابگو نیست. مشکل دوم مسأله همپوشانی است. برخی افراد در گروههای پستی متعددی عضویت دارند در حالیکه طبیعی است که فقط یکبار پرسشنامه شما را پاسخگو باشند و همین مسأله تعیین میزان پاسخگویی جامعه مورد مطالعه را دشوار می سازد

در جلسه ای که با یکی از استادان دانشکده داشتم میگفتند سه بار لینک پرسشنامه مرا از طریق سه فهرست پستی مختلف (ایفلا، اس.ال.آ و انجمن کتابداران و اطلاع رسانان استرالیا) دریافت نموده اند. بنابراین باید در ایمیلی که به فهرستهای پستی فرستاده میشود این مورد را پیش بینی نموده و از افراد پیشاپیش بخاطر احتمال وقوع آن عذرخواهی نمود

چند روزی بعد از اینکه لینک پرسشنامه را برای یکی از فهرستهای پستی ایفلا فرستادم با پاسخهای فراوانی همگی از استرالیا مواجه شده و متعجب شدم چرا که به هیچ فهرست پستی در استرالیا پرسشنامه را نفرستاده بودم. به یکی از پاسخگویان ایمیل زدم که از چه کانالی پرسشنامه مرا گرفته و او ایمیل حاوی لینک پرسشنامه را برایم فرستاد و فهمیدم یکی از پاسخگویان خیرخواه در ایفلا متن ایمیل مرا برای چند فهرست پستی در استرالیا فوروارد کرده بود. این هم از مسائلی است که تعیین میزان پاسخگویی را مشکل می سازد. چون ممکن است افراد لینک پرسشنامه را برای سایر افرادی که شما پیش بینی ننموده اید نیز بفرستند.

مسأله عضویت در فهرستهای پستی: برخی گردانندگان لیستها به شما اجازه میدهند که متن ایمیلتان را برای آنان بفرستید و خودشان به گروه پست میکنند اما برخی دیگر شما را ملزم به عضویت در گروه می نمایند که باید چند وقتی -چون برای فرستادن ایمیل یادآوری دوباره به این عضویت نیاز خواهید داشت- ایمیلهای ناخواسته را تحمل نمایید

مشکل بعدی چندباره فرستادن پاسخهاست. برخی پاسخ دهندگان به اشتباه ممکن است چند بار پرسشنامه را ارسال کنند. تشخیص تکراری بودن پاسخها و حذف موارد تکراری وقت گیر است. نگارنده برخی موارد تکراری را با اختلاف زمانهای بسیار کوتاه بین پاسخهای متوالی تشخیص داده و حذف نمود

مسأله پرسشهای باز و بسته: سؤالاتی مثل سن و کشور محل سکونت را باید بصورت بسته طرح نمود. یعنی مثلا لیستی از گروههای سنی و یا لیست کشورها را در مقابل سؤال قرار داد تا پاسخ دهنده مورد مربوط به خود را انتخاب کند. تحلیل اینگونه پرسشها بسیار آسان است. البته متأسفانه اینجانب پرسش مربوط به کشور محل زندگی را بصورت باز طراحی نمودم و مجبور شدم زمانی را صرف یکسان سازی اسامی مختلف برای کشورهای واحد نمایم. مثلا" در مورد آمریکا عبارات

USA, US, United States of America, America, usa, us

بکار برده شده بود که باید همه را یکی میکردم

اما برای برخی دیگر از سؤالات مثل میزان تحصیلات و شغل که یکی از موارد پرسشنامه اینجانب نیز بود از آنجا که در کشورهای مختلف سیستمهای متنوع آموزشی و پستهای شغلی مختلفی وجود دارد بسته نمودن این سؤالات ممکن بود منجر به حذف برخی موارد شود بنابراین این پرسشها بصورت باز طراحی شد و بسیار مفید واقع شد. برایم جالب بود که پستهای مشاغل کتابداری و اطلاع رسانی در دنیا اینهمه اسامی گوناگون داشته باشد

مشکل دیگر مسائل فنی است. مثلا" پرسشنامه باید طوری طراحی شود که بارگذاریش بآسانی میسر شود تا اگر کسی از اینترنت با سرعت پایین نیز استفاده میکند بتواند با سرعت به آن دست یابد. از قبل باید این موارد را تست نمود. ترافیک شبکه هم ممکن است عدم دسترسی به پرسشنامه را موجب شود.

مشکل آخر و بسیار مهم اینکه طراحی پرسشنامه تحت وب دانش فنی و آشنا بودن با نرم افزارهای مختلف را می طلبد. از آنجا که آقای جمالی در این زمینه تجربه بیشتری دارند میخواستم خواهش کنم کار را ادامه داده و تجربیات خود را در این زمینه با ما سهیم کنند

از آنجا که در پرسشنامه های تحت وب پاسخگو ناشناس باقی میماند (نوشتن نام یا آدرس ایمیل اغلب اختیاری است و جهت ارسال خلاصه نتایج و یا مصاحبه با افرادی که علاقمندی شان را اعلام نموده اند استفاده میشود.) افراد بیشتری تمایل به پاسخگویی نشان میدهند. در حالیکه در پرسشنامه های پیوست شده با ایمیل آدرس ایمیل شما ممکن است هویت شما را آشکار کرده و عاملی بازدارنده برای پاسخگویی باشد.

اینترنت امکانات فوق العاده ای برای انجام پژوهشهایی که از ابزار پرسشنامه استفاده می کنند فراهم کرده است. پرسشنامه تحت وب و ارسال پرسشنامه از طریق فایلهای پیوست شده به ایمیل مدتهاست که باب شده و عملکردی بسیار کارآمدتر از روشهای سنتی ارسال پرسشنامه داشته اند. در حوزه کتابداری نیز شاهد این حرکتها هستیم. پرسشنامه اینترنتی توان فوق العاده بالقوه ای برای پژوهشهای کتابداری دارد*. گروه بحث مجازی کتابداران در ایران بارها بعنوان جامعه پژوهش در نظر گرفته شده است. تاکنون پرسشنامه های ارسالی به گروه بحث در قالب فایلهای پیوست شده به ایمیل بود ولی اخیرا لینک یک پرسشنامه تحت وب نیزتوسط یکی از دانشجویان کارشناسی ارشد کتابداری به گروه ارسال شد که گرچه مشکلاتی از لحاظ ساختاری و فنی داشت، بعنوان اولین پرسشنامه از این نوع نویدبخش بود. پرسشنامه اینترنتی خانم خلیلی نیز گرچه در حوزه کتابداری نبود، از معدود پرسشنامه های ایرانی بود که بلحاظ فنی و ساختاری بدون مشکل بنظر میرسید. از آنجا که اینجانب نیز بخشی از کار پایان نامه خود را با پرسشنامه اینترنتی انجام داده ام میخواستم تجربیاتم را در اختیار شما بگذارم شاید مفید واقع شود.

افراد علاقمند به زندگی بن لادن

این ماجرا رو شنیدید که بعد ازماجرای 11 سپتامبر، اف بی آی از یکی از شبکه های کتابخانه های عمومی آمریکا درخواست کرد که لیست کسانی رو که کتابهای زندگینامه بن لادن رو امانت گرفتن به پلیس ارائه کنه تا ببینند چه کسانی بودند شاید بتونند ارتباطی با تروریست ها کشف کنند. اما کتابخانه های عمومی از این کار سر باز زدند . این ماجرا باعث کش مکش میان معتمدین کتابخانه های عمومی و اف بی آی شد که نهایتا کتابخونه های عمومی برنده شدند وبرای حفظ رسالت خودشون و رعایت حریم خصوصی زندگی مراجعین لیست رو به اف بی آی تحویل ندادند منتها من به کتابدارای ایرانی توصیه نمی کنم در چنین شرایطی بگن نه چون احتمالا هم در کتابخونشون تخته می شه، هم شغلشون رو از دست می دهند هم اینکه یه مدتی باید کتابدار افتخاری یکی از زندانهای کشور می شن!!.

Some of you might have noticed that gradually more publishers adopt electronic submission for their journals. Authors need to register and create an account for this kind of service. In our field JDoc from Emerald launched an e-submission service for its authors a few months ago called JADE. Today I found out that JASIST from Willy publishing has also adopted an e-submission method. it's service called ScholarOne. The advantage of e-submission services is that authors can track their articles' status while they are being processed by the publishers. They can see online at which stage their articles are (being reviewed, etc.). one year ago it was a pain to submit an article to JASIST. auhtors had to send 3 hard copies plus and e-version. but now it's been made much easier with ScholarOne.

ازدشواریهای وبلاگ نویسی
مثل هرامکان و سرویس اینترنتی دیگر وبلاگ نویسی هم با مشکلات و دشواریهای خاص خود روبروست. اما خوشبختانه برای این مشکلات راه حلهای متعددی وجود دارد. نخست آنکه روزآمدی سازی مستمر وبلاگ ممکن است کاری وقت گیر باشد و این موضوع نه یک مشکل جدی بلکه می تواند یک دشواری در فرایند وبلاگ نویسی تلقی شود. ایجاد وبلاگ آسان است اما زنده نگه داشتن آن مستلزم صرف وقت و انرژی است. البته این بدان معنی نیست که اگر شما وبلاگی را ایجاد کردید لازم است هر روز مطالب مفصل و تازه ای به آن اضافه کنید. این تصور نه مطلوب است و نه ممکن. باید دقت نمود که با اتخاذ یک خط مشی روزآمدسازی سنجیده زمان محدود و مشخصی را به این کار اختصاص داد و تعادلی منطقی بین فاصله نوشتن مدخلها در وبلاگ ایجاد نمود.
از طرف دیگر جالب است بدانید که در فرهنگ نوظهور وبلاگ نویسی مهم نیست که فاصله روزآمد سازی وبلاگها چقدر بوده و یا هر مدخل از چه حجمی برخوردار باشد چرا که مدخلهای کوتاه و مختصر خوانندگان بیشتری دارد. آنچه مهم است کیفیت مطالب عرضه شده و وفادار ماندن به چارچوب موضوعی وبلاگ است. به بیان دیگر اگر وبلاگی مثلا درباره یک موضوع پژوهشی مشخص است تمام مدخلها به نوعی به همان موضوع مرتبط باشد.
در کنار این دشواریها ممکن است وبلاگ نویسی با مشکلات دیگری نیز همراه باشد که وبلاگ نویس باید مهارت لازم برای حل آنها را فرا گیرد. مهمترین مشکلی که ممکن است برای یک وبلاگ پیش آید حمله اسپمها به آن است. اسپمها پیامهایی هستند که توسط نرم افزارهایی خاص به طور خودکار مثل ویروسهای رایانه ای در سطح وسیعی منتشر می شوند و مانند پیامهای الکترونیکی ناخواسته عمل می کنند. بعضی از این اسپمها پیوندهایی را به سایتهای تجاری و تبلیغاتی برقرار می کنند و برخی دیگر حاوی نشانی سایتهای غیر اخلاقی هستند. برای حل این مشکل در سرویسهایی که خدمات وبلاگها را ارائه می کنند فهرستهایی به نام لیست سیاه وجود دارد و از نظر فنی امکان حمله اسپمهای شناخته شده را به وبلاگها از بین می برند. اما متاسفانه گاهی فاصله روزآمدسازی این فهرستها از تولیدکنندگان اسپمها قدیمی تر هستند و اسپمهای جدیدی در شبکه منتشر می شوند. در این صورت ممکن است اسپمهای مزاحمی در وبلاگ شما ظاهر می گردند و لازم است که به صورت دستی آنها را حذف کنید. بسته به تعداد اسپمها ممکن است این کار وقتگیر باشد که در این صورت آخرین راه حل برای مقابله با اسپمهای مزاحم قفل کردن قسمت نظر خواهی وبلاگ است. گاهی که هجوم اسپمها زیاد می شود این روش به عنوان آخرین راه حل توصیه می گردد و در این شرایط می توان از خوانندگان وبلاگ خواست چنانچه پیام یا نظری در مورد نوشته های شما دارند از طریق پست الکترونیکی اطلاع دهند. وقتی قسمت نظرخواهی وبلاگ قفل شود دیگر هیچ اسپمی نمیتواند مزاحم وبلاگ شما شود.
مروری بر یک تجربه وبلاگ نویسی موضوعی
نگارنده این نوشته از اگوست 2003 وبلاگی را در زمینه موضوع پژوهش دوره دکتری خود راه اندازی کرده است که تحت عنوان " دروازه های به وب نامرئی" و به نشانی ذیل دسترس پذیر است.

همانطورکه از عنوان وبلاگ مشخص است این وبلاگ تلاش می کند به عنوان محلی برای تولید و گردآوری اطلاعات راجع به موضوع "وب نامرئی" عمل کند. آنچه در این وبلاگ آمده نظرات نگارنده در مورد این موضوع و پیوندهای فراوان به سایتها، سمینارها، کتابها و مقالات مرتبط به این موضوع است. از نظرحجم و تنوع اطلاعات گردآودی شده، این وبلاگ اکنون به یکی از سایتهای تخصصی در این موضوع خاص تبدیل شده به طوریکه سایتهای دیگری در این حوزه به این وبلاگ لینک داده اند.
از ژانویه 2004 تا کنون (پنج ماه گذشته) این وبلاگ حدود 2350 مورد بازدید شده است. حدود 51 درصد بازدیدکنندگان از انگلستان، 41.3 درصد از امریکا، 12.7 درصد از ایران و مابقی از سایر کشورها بوده است. نکته قابل توجه در اینجا سهم قابل توجه بازدیدها از ایران است به طوری که این وبلاگ پل ارتباطی موثری بین وبلاگ نویس و خوانندگان علاقه مند به این موضوع در ایران برقرار کرده است.

نتیجه
وبلاگ نویسی می تواند فرصت ارزشمندی را برای دانشجویان خارج از کشور و همچنین خانوده های آنها فراهم کند تا از این رهگذر به ثبت خاطرات خود و نشر و تبادل اطلاعات در حوزه تخصصی خویش بپردازند. گردآوری مطالب علمی در مورد موضوع مورد پژوهش در قالب یک وبلاگ که می تواند مورد استفاده سایرین نیز قرار گیرد به تدریج تبدیل به یک منبع مفید در حوزه مورد نظر خواهد شد. بی تردید وقت و انرژی صرف شده برای ایجاد یک وبلاگ چه به نیت ثبت خاطره ها و چه با رویکرد موضوعی بلا استفاده نخواهد ماند و نتایج ارزشمندی در پی خواهد شد.
اگر وبلاگ شما به زبان فارسی نوشته شود می تواند مورد استفاده تمام فارسی زبانان قرار خواهد گیرد و از سوی دیگر به ارتقا سهم زبان فارسی در محیط وب کمک خواهد نمود و اگر به زبان انگلیسی باشد هم به بهبود مهارتهای نگارشی فرد نگارنده کمک میکند و هم مخاطبان بیشتری از اقصی نقاط جهان خواهد داشت. بنابراین، در هر دو صورت این اقدام مفید خواهد بود و هر یک کارکردها و نتایج خاص خود را دارد.

برخی از نکات فنی وبلاگ نویسی
در این قسمت مختصری از مباحث فنی و تکنیکی در چگونگی ایجاد و نگهداری یک وبلاگ مطرح می شود. البته همانطور که قبلا گفته شد وبلاگ نویسی مستلزم فراگیری مهارت رایانه ای خاصی نیست و همه افرادی که با اینترنت و پست الکترونیکی آشنایی دارند به راحتی می توانند برای خود وبلاگ تهیه کنند.

الف. ابزار و نرم افزار وبلاگ نویسی
نرم افزاری که برای ایجاد و تولید وبلاگ مورد استفاده قرار می گیرد ممکن است از قابلیتهایی متفاوتی برخوردار باشد. بعضی از این نرم افزارها؛ یا به بیان بهتر پردازشگرهای متنی؛ امکانات اولیه وبلاگ نویسی را در اختیار کاربران قرار می دهند. نمونه های متعددی از این سرویسهای وبلاگ نویسی در شبکه وب وجود دارند که به صورت رایگان دسترس پذیر هستند. از آن جمله می توان به سایت معروف بلاگر اشاره کرد که به نشانی اینترنتی زیر دسترس پذیر است:

ایجاد یک وبلاگ در سایت بلاگر حتی از ایجاد یک نشانی پست الکترونیکی نیز ساده تر است و تنها کافی است یک عنوان برای وبلاگ خود و یک اسم کاربر و گذرواژه انتخاب کنید و نشانی پست الکترونیکی خود را نیز به سیستم اطلاع دهید و بلافاصله وبلاگ جدید با عنوان انتخابی شما تشکیل می شود و آماده استفاده خواهد بود. در مرحله بعد صفحه جدیدی در اختیار شما قرار می گیرد که کم و بیش شبیه صفحه نرم افزار ورد (البته به مراتب ابتدایی تر از آن) است و پس از تایپ متن مورد نظر با یک کلیک مطالب تایپ شده همراه با تاریخ و ساعت نگارش و به نام شما در وبلاگ ثبت شده و برای خوانندگان قابل مشاهد است. امکان ویرایش یا حذف مطالب نوشته شده نیز در آینده وجود دارد. ضمنا امکان تایپ فارسی هم در سایت بلاگر موجود است و توصیه می شود از فرمت یونیکد برای این منظور استفاده شود.

تعداد وبلاگهای موجود در سايت پرشين بلاگ تا کنون به مرز هفده هزار مورد رسیده است که این تعداد به سرعت نیز رو به افزایش است. وبلاگهای موجود در این سایت در گروههایی مثل آموزش، هنر، موسیقی ، ادبیات، اخبار، طنز و غیره دسته بندی شده اند.
سایت پرشین بلاگ از محبوبیت بالایی بین وبلاگ نویسان فارسی برخوردار است به طوری که سهمی معادل هشتاد درصد وبلاگ های فارسی را به خود اختصاص می دهد. جالب است که ایران یکی از کشورهایی است که وبلاگ نویسی در آن از رشد چشمگیری برخوردار می باشد بطوریکه ضريب ماهانه افزايش آمار مربوط به وبلاگ ها در ايران را بيش از سی درصد برآورد می کنند. رشد وبلاگهای فارسی؛ علاوه بر همه کاربردهایی که دارد اما مجال پرداختن به آنها در این مختصر میسر نیست؛ نقش قابل توجهی در افزایش سهم زبان فارسی در میان زبانهای موجود در اینترنت بازی می کند.

بعضی از نرم افزارهای پیشرفته تر وبلاگ نویسی رایگان نیستند و استفاده از آنها مستلزم خرید نسخه ای از نرم افزار است. از آن جمله می توان به نرم افزار مووایبل تایپ اشاره کرد. مزیت اصلی این نرم افزار امکانات بیشتر آن است. علاوه بر پرداخت بهای نرم افزار استفاده از آن مستلزم در اختیار داشتن یک وب سرور نیز می باشد. برای این منظور لازم است از مدیر سایت دانشگاه یا دانشکده خواست تا این امکان را برای دانشجویان فراهم کنند چرا که نصب این نرم افزار بر روی سرور فقط توسط مدیرسایت میسر است. پس از نصب نرم افرار بر روی سرور و اختصاص فضای مورد نیاز، مدیر سایت یک اسم کاربر و گذرواژه در اختیار شما قرار خواهد داد تا به روزآمد سازی وبلاگ خود اقدام کنید. جزییات بیشتر در مورد این نرم افزار را می توانید از سایت زیر بدست آورید. ضمنا نسخه ساده تر این نرم افزار تایپ پد نام دارد.

ب. دسته بندی اطلاعات موجود در وبلاگ
در دراز مدت به تدریج بر حجم نوشته های موجود در وبلاگ افزوده می شود و لازم است مطالب نوشته شده را به نحوی طبقه بندی کرد. هر چند اغلب نرم افزارهای تولید وبلاگ به طور خودکار مدخلهای ایجاد شده را به صورت ماهانه آرشیو می کنند اما پیشنهاد می شود برای سهولت بازیابی، مدخلهای را که به تدریج افزوده میشوند در ذیل چند دسته موضوعی اصلی طبقه بندی کرد.

ج. میزان فضای مورد نیاز برای توسعه وبلاگ
معمولا وبلاگها به فضای زیادی نیاز ندارند چرا که بیشتر اطلاعات به شکل متنی است. از طرفی معمولا فضای کافی برای این منظور در سرورها وجود دارد و فضای مورد نیاز مشکل عمده ای محسوب نمی شود. با این حال اگر وبلاگی حاوی تصاویر فراوان باشد احتمالا به فضای بیشتری نیاز خواهد بود که در این صورت نوع دوم از نرم افزارهای وبلاگ نویسی مناسبتر خواهد بود چرا که در آن صورت وبلاگ شما بر روی سایت دانشگاه مستقر است.
د. وبلاگها و امکانات چندرسانه ای
مانند تمام رسانه های مبتنی بر وب، وبلاگها نیز دارای امکان افزودن تصویر و صدا هستند. بنابراین، بسته به موضوع وبلاگ و رویکرد آن می توان از امکانات چند رسانه ای نیز در وبلاگها بهره مند شد.

ه. اهمیت پیوندهای وبی در وبلاگها

مزایای ایجاد وبلاگ
از آنجا که هدف اصلی این نوشته تبیین سودمندی وبلاگ نویسی برای دانشجویان خارج از کشور و خانوده های آنهاست، در بیان مزایای وبلاگ نویسی این گروه خاص از کاربران وب مورد توجه قرار میگیرد. پرسش اصلی این است که با توجه به مشغله تحصیلی دانشجویان چه اهمیت و فایده ای در این کار وجود دارد که می تواند وقت و انرزی صرف شده برای تولید و نگهداری یک وبلاگ را موجه کند؟ در پاسخ باید گفت از آنجا که نویسنده این نوشته خود تجربه وبلاگ نویسی موضوعی مرتبط به رساله خویش را داشته و آن را مفید ارزیابی می کند، امیدوار است در اینجا این تجربه شخصی را با سایر دانشجویان در میان گذارد.

برای روشن شدن این بحث می توان وبلاگهایی که توسط دانشجویان خارج از کشور و خانوده های آنها به سه دسته عمده وبلاگهای موضوعی- تخصصی، وبلاگهای شخصی و وبلاگهای گروهی تقسیم کرد.
1. وبلاگهای موضوعی و تخصصی
سودمندی وبلاگهای موضوعی برای دانشجویان را می توان در چند بخش خلاصه نمود. نخست آنکه وبلاگ نویسی می تواند نقش مهمی در ارتقاء مهارتهای نگارشی آنها بازی کند. از آنجا که توسعه و بهبود مهارتهای نوشتاری هر فرد مستلزم تمرین مستمر است وبلاگ نویسی این فرصت را برای وبلاگ نویس فراهم می کند که به طور مرتب مطالبی را بنویسد. بویژه این ممارست در مورد مهارتهای نگارشی به زبان انگلیسی مهمتر است. بنابراین، اگر وبلاگ مورد نظر به انگلیسی نوشته شود از این نظر مفیدتر خواهد بود.
فایده دوم وبلاگ نویسی فراهم شدن امکان دریافت نطرات خوانندگان وبلاگ است. همانطور که گفته شد، ویژگی تعاملی وبلاگ آن را از یک رسانه یک سویه به یک رسانه تعاملی تبدیل می کند و گاهی می تواند مثل یک گروه بحث و گفتگو عمل کند.
مزیت دیگر وبلاگهای موضوعی در انباشته شدن انبوهی از اطلاعات مرتبط به موضوع تحقیق در طول زمان است. بویژه که در محیط وب به راحتی می توان بین دو نقطه پیوند برقرار نمود و از این رهگذر امکان دسترسی به منابع هم موضوع را فراهم آورد و مجموعه ای از پیوندهای هم موضوع را در یک نقطه گرد آورد و به تحلیل و ارزیابی آنها پرداخت.
2. وبلاگهای شخصی
در اهمیت و سودمندی ثبت خاطرات و مشاهدات دانشجویان طی دوره تحصیلی آنان در خارج از کشور هیچ تردیدی نیست. وبلاگ می تواند این فرایند را به نحو قابل توجهی تسهیل نموده و ثمر بخشی آن را بهبود بخشید. وبلاگ نویسی ثبت خاطره ها را تسهیل می کند چرا که مستقیما به شکل الکترونیکی نوشته می شود. از طرفی آن را بسیار ثمربخش تر می کند چرا که همزمان با نوشتن خاطره ها مخاطبان آن نه تنها امکان مطالعه مطالب را خواهند یافت بلکه امکان نظر دادن پیرامون آن را نیز دارند. علاوه بر آن تعداد و تنوع خوانندگان در محیط وب به مراتب بیشتر از یک اثر چاپی است.
3. وبلاگهای گروهی
وبلاگ نویسی را می توان به شکل دست جمعی و مشارکتی نیز تهیه کرد. به این ترتیب، دریک وبلاگ گروهی نه یک نفر بلکه تعدادی از افراد می توانند در نگارش مدخلها مشارکت کنند. بر اساس رویکرد وبلاگهای گروهی می توان آنها را به دو دسته منطقه ای و موضوعی تقسیم نمود.

دانشجویان یک شهر یا چند شهر مجاور می توانند با ایجاد یک وبلاگ گروهی فرصتی برای همکاری و همفکری فراهم کنند. موضوع یک وبلاگ گروهی منطقه ای می تواند کاملا عمومی باشد و مثل یک تابلو اعلانات الکترونیکی عمل کند. تابلویی که همه افراد امکان افزودن اطلاعات و اخبار مورد نظر خود را دارند.
3.2. وبلاگهای گروهی موضوعی
دانشجویانی که دریک دانشگاه یا دانشگاههای مختلف در رشته های همسان یا مشابه تحصیل می کنند می توانند نسبت به ایجاد وبلاگهای گروهی موضوعی اقدام کنند. بدیهی است که موضوع این نوع وبلاگها باید همواره در چارچوب موضوع مورد توافق اولیه باقی بماند و از پراکنده گویی پرهیز شود.

مقدمه

با ظهور شبکه جهانگستر وب در نخستین سالهای دهه 1990 فرصتهای جدیدی برای انتشار الکترونیکی در اختیار طیف وسیعی از اقشار جامعه قرار گرفت و دنیای نشر و انتشار به شکل بی سابقه ای متحول گردید. از آن تاریخ به بعد وب جهانگستر فرایند تولید، ذخیره، اشاعه و بازیابی اطلاعات الکترونیکی را به نحو چشمگیری تغییر داد. در اواخر دهه 90 یعنی سال 1999 معرفی امکان تازه ای تحت عنوان وبلاگ شبکه وب را به یکباره متحول نمود. وبلاگ و وبلاگ نویسی به شکلی باورنکردنی مورد استقبال کاربران شبکه وب قرار گرفت و در مدتی کوتاه بر تعداد و تنوع وبلاگها بسرعت افزوده شد. طبق آخرین آمارهای موجود تعداد وبلاگها در شبکه وب در ژانویه 2004 به عدد 1653,708 رسیده است و این آمار بی وقفه رو به افزایش است.

پدیده نوظهور وبلاگ موضوعی گسترده و چند وجهی است و حرفهای بسیاری برای گفتن دارد اما، نوشته حاضر نه قصد پرداختن به جنبه های مختلف آن را دارد و نه بضاعت آن را. آنچه که این نوشته کوتاه به آن می پردازد مقدمه ای است بر چگونگی ساخت یک وبلاگ ساده و کاربردهای بالقوه وبلاگ برای دانشجویان ایرانی خارج از کشور و نقشی که می تواند در پشرفت تحصیلی آنها ایفا کند. با این حال لازم است ابتدا نگاهی گذرا به تعریف وبلاگ و اهمیت آن داشته باشیم.

" وبلاگ " چیست و چه تفاوتی با " وب سایت " دارد؟
وبلاگ یکی از امکانات نسبتا جدید شبکه جهانگستر وب است که برای کاربران وب امکان تولید و انتشار اطلاعات در این شبکه را به سهولت؛ و معمولا به رایگان؛ فراهم می کند. نخستین وبلاگ ها از سال 1999 در شبکه وب ظاهر شدند و به سرعت گسترش و محبوبیت یافتند. وبلاگها از نظر محتوی معمولا مانند دفتر خاطرات هستند با این تفاوت که به فرمت الکترونیکی نوشته می شوند و امکان انتشار جهانی دارند.

از آنجا که هر وبلاگ نشانی اینترنتی خود را دارد، تمام کاربران وب در هر نقطه و هر زمان می توانند به آن دسترسی یابند آن را مطالعه نموده و از همه مهمتر نظر خودشان را نیز به دفتر خاطرات نویسنده اضافه کنند. گرچه بیشتر وبلاگها شبیه دفتر خاطرات هستند اما کاربرد و اهمیت وبلاگ نویسی به همین جا ختم نمی شود بلکه در دنیای امروز وبلاگها نقشهای مهمی در آموزش، اطلاع رسانی و تبادل فرهنگها بازی می کنند که در ادامه به مواردی از آنها اشاره می شود.
در حال حاضر افراد مختلف از اقشار گوناگون جامعه پیرامون بسیاری از موضوعات متنوع وبلاگ می نویسند. دنیای وبلاگها بسیار رنگارنگ و ناهمگون است. طیف وبلاگ نویسان واقعا چشمگیر می باشد و تقریبا تمام قشرهای جامعه را در بر می گیرد. در دنیای وبلاگها می توان از وبلاگ معاون رییس جمهور تا وبلاگ دانش آموزان دبستانی، زنان خانه دار، نویسندگان، دانشگاهیان و روزنامه نگاران حرفه ای را یافت. تقریبا از هر گروهی نماینده یا نمایندگانی در جمع وبلاگ نویسان یافت می شود. موضوع وبلاگها مثل نویسندگان آنها متفاوت و متنوع است و می تواند راجع به هر چیزی باشد.

آنچه در مورد وبلاگ و وبلاگ نویسی اهمیت دارد سه ویژگی منحصر به فرد این پدیده است که آن را از وب سایت متمایز می کند.
نخست آنکه انتشار اطلاعات از طریق وبلاگ بسیار ساده است و به کمترین امکانات و مهارتهای رایانه ای نیاز دارد. همه آنهایی که به اینترنت دسترسی دارند می توانند وبلاگ هم داشته باشند. پس از ایجاد وبلاگ که معمولا نظیر پست الکترونیکی تنها به پر کردن چند فرم الکترونیکی نیاز دارد انتشار اطلاعات در وبلاگ به سادگی تایپ در پردازشگرهای متنی مثل ورد می باشد.
دوم آنکه وبلاگ یک رسانه دو سویه یا تعاملی است. به بیان دیگر خوانندگان وبلاگها امکان مشارکت در توسعه وبلاگ را خواهند داشت. هر پاراگراف یا پیام که به وبلاگ افزوده می شود یک مدخل نامیده می شود و امکان دریافت نظر خوانندگان را نیز دارد.
سومین ویژگی وبلاگ روزآمدی اطلاعات در آنهاست. وبلاگ نویسی فرایندی مستمر است و مرتب بر حجم اطلاعات موجود در آن افزوده می شود و این مسئله وبلاگها را همیشه روزآمد نگه می دارد.

همانطور که در مقدمه گفته شد این نوشته کوتاه نه قصد پرداختن به تمام ویژگیهای دنیای وبلاگها را دارد و نه مجال آن را بلکه تلاش می کند کاربرد این پدیده را برای دانشجویان خارج از کشور و خانوده های آنها تبیین کند.

PhD by publication

Apparantly there is a scheme in some universities in some of European countries by which students are allowed to submit a few published journal articles to a committee in the university and get PhD. articles are considered as a replacement for dissertation. It means if you have a few articles, which are all top peer-reviewed articles mainly on the same topic published in good journals, you can submit them to a committee in the university and they referee them
and grant you a phd. this is i guess mainly for people who are already associated with the university in a way, and again mainly in humanities. Azam says that this scheme is well-established in some countries like Denmark but it doesn't have so many fans because publishing in top journals is time-intensive and not so easy.

هيأت دولت عصر روز يكشنبه گذشته به رياست حجت الاسلام والمسلمين سيدمحمد خاتمى، رئيس جمهور جلسه تشكيل داد. به گزارش ايسنا، در اين جلسه لايحه آزادى اطلاعات مطرح و به تصويب رسيد. بر اساس اين لايحه هر شخص ايرانى حق دسترسى به اطلاعات عمومى را دارد مگر آن كه قانون منع كرده باشد. همچنين بر اساس اين لايحه مؤسسات عمومى مكلفند اطلاعات مربوط را در دسترسى مردم قرار دهند و نمى توانند از متقاضى دسترسى به اطلاعات هيچ گونه دليل يا توجيهى جهت تقاضا مطالبه كنند. همچنين هريك از مؤسسات عمومى موظف شدند در راستاى نفع عمومى و حقوق شهروندى دست كم به طور سالانه اطلاعات عمومى خود را با استفاده از امكانات رايانه اى يا حتى الامكان در يك كتاب راهنما منتشر كنند. منبع روزنامه ایران

course for heads of departments

I just had a meeting with my supervisor and he said he’d been very busy last two weeks. He said he attended a four-day course about "how to be head of a department". He is head of the department (school) at UCL and he was for a few years at City as well. He said he didn't want to attend but it was compulsory! He said that now he is very glad that he has attended the course. I asked him what they taught them and who led the course. he said first there were a few of high officials of the university like the Dean and etc told them how the university works, how is the finance and what are the main strategies and goals and etc. Then they had a few tasks and practices. For example a management expert discussed with them some managerial issues that they might face, or they discussed how to motivate the staff and etc. The course generally has been very interactive. My supervisor said it was a great opportunity for networking and knowing other heads of departments.

It’s very interesting to know that how highly ranked universities like Oxford and UCL try to guarantee the quality of their departments and education. A good university like UCL wants quality from its department and if a daprtment fails, the university might simply shut that depratment down.

Life after PhD

These are some tips I learned from Dr. Susan Scott from the dapartment of Informaiton System in a seminar in LSE about life of a PhD students after graduation specially in UK academic environment.
There are a few options for a PhD after graduation including:
1. Lectureship, This is mainly teaching with some research and administrative responsibilities. Research is important because it is the main factor that helps the academic person get promoted.
2. Research assistant or research officer, this is mainly research with a little teaching. In this case usually other people are responsible for research agenda and getting grants. So the researcher will be working on other people’s research agenda. It is better to have a little of teaching.
3. Research fellow (or postdoc). This is also mainly just research. But its difference with the second is that this is self-directed. Research fellow will have his/her own agenda and work on his/her own research.

Publication is very important in academic environment. It is recommended that a graduated PhD has at least one article published or in process in a A-level journal (such as JDoc, JASIST) in the field and two articles published in B-level journals (such as Aslib proceedings). Book chapters and seminar and conference papers are not very important for getting promotion or when applying for job. Because they are not usually peer reviewed. Even books are not very effective in the CV unless they have a great and well-respected effect on the field.

just some general informaiton about promotion of staff in academia. In UK, the hierarchy of university lecturers is as follows:

temporary lecturer
Tenure track lecturer
junior lecturer
senior lecturer
reader
professor

temporary lecturer is someone who has a short contract for example for one year, tenure track is a longer contract say for example for 4-5 years. but when it comes to permanent lecturship, it is devided to junior and senior, then they are promoted to reader and finally professor. professors might get some extra honorary titles like School professor, or Professor in Law and so on. the reason why they use the title "reader" is not because they read the material to students, its story goes back to around 11th centure when Oxford university and generally universities were established in the Britain. There were not so many books at the time and lecturers apparently didn't have access to books, but readers had (or something like this stroy, i don't remember exactly).

In the USA, the system is different, they have:

instructor or teacher
assistant professor
associate professor
(full) professor

there are some other kinds of professors such as professor emeritus (a retired professor) and visitor professor (its meaning is self-evident).

As college students, you're just about to set sail into the real world.As you prepare for the battle ground of life, you'll hear many speeches,read tons of books and get miles of advise telling you to work hard, dream big, go out and do something for yourself, and have a vision.

Not bad advise, really. In fact, following these nuggets of truth may just bring you to the top. But as I've lived my life over the years, I have come to realise that it is great to dream big, have a vision, make a name, and work hard. But guess what : There's something better than that -
So my message today simply asks the question,what's better than ...?
What's better than being negative ?

Let's start off with something really simple.What's better than a long speech ? No doubt, a short one. So, you guysare in luck because I intend to keep this short.

Now, let me take you through a very simple math exam. I'll rattle off a couple of equations, and you tell me what you observe about them. Be mindful of the instruction. You are to tell me what you observe about the equations.
Here it goes : 3+4=7, 9+2=11, 8+4=13 and 6+6=12.Tell me, what do you observe ?
Every time I conduct the test, more than 90 percent of the participants immediately say, 8+4 is NOT 13, it's 12. That's true and they are correct. But they could have also observed that the three other equations were right. That 3+4 is 7, that 9+2 is 11, andthat 6+6 is 12.
What's my point ? Many people immediately focus on the negative instead of the positive. Most of us focus on what's wrong with other people more than what's right about them. Examine those four equations. Three were right an only one was wrong. But what is the knee-jerk observation ?The wrong equation.

If 10 people you didn't know were to walk through that door, most of you would describe those people by what's negative about them. He's fat.He's balding. Oh, the short one. Oh, the skinny girl. etc.

Get the point ? It's always the negative we focus on and not the positive.You'll definitely experience this in the Corporate World. You do a hundred good things and one mistake-guess what? Chances are, your attention will be called on that one mistake..
So what's better than focusing on the negative ?
Believe me, it focusing on the positive. And if this world could learn to focus on the positive more than the negative, it would be a much nicer place to live in.

Iranian students in Australia protest against the SBS policy in broadcasting Iranian movies

Following is the letter which has been sent to SBS:

" We, a group of Iranian students and families in Australia, protest against the SBS policy of regularly broadcasting solely one type of Iranian movies and documentaries that portray Iran as hell; Iranian culture as backward; and the whole nation as a place of hunger, earthquake, immorality, and poverty. We have not seen a single positive piece about Iran broadcast from the Australian media. Most specifically, we hereby express our objection to the broadcasting of the documentary *Prostitution behind the Veil* in The Cutting Edge program on Tuesday 19 April 2005 for the following reasons:
First, the film breaches the ethics of making others your subject. For instance, while the director, Nahid Persson promises the clergyman, the old man and Leila (17-year-old girl) not to record the Sighe (temporary marriage) session, she acts contrary to her promise.
Neither should she have shown the faces of people she showed for the second reason that it endangers their lives through publicising their culturally and socially stigmatised behaviour. Besides, as in many countries, in Iran drug abuse and prostitution are illicit acts. We believe that the filmmaker and producers have manipulated the two women and others in the film.
Third, taking two problematic cases from the bottom line end of society with drug and probably psychological problems and generalising it to the whole population distorts the fact that we feel the majority of Iranians definitely practice monogamy and that temporary marriage is culturally and socially unacceptable.
Fourth, portraying Iranian women mainly as victims of social injustice in Iran is itself unjust to the struggle of women and human rights activists in Iran. One instance of the bright side of Iran that we hardly ever witness in media is that 65 percent of all university students are women. Women are increasingly granted scholarship to pursue their higher education in the best universities all around the world. They are also approximately half of working force in education and medical sectors. Further, according to organizations such as World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, the situation of women's health in Iran has significantly improved in the past years. Not only have child mortality rates fallen dramatically, but life expectancy at birth has also increased significantly.
Iranian female students signing this letter believe that the director who has lived twenty years away from Iran has no authentic right to speak for millions of Iranian women inside due to her poor and simplified analysis of the complexity of life there.
Finally, the issues Iran is usually targeted at are the problems some other countries such as Australia are also confronted with such as illicit drug abuse. Current studies indicate that there is a close relationship between abuse of illicit drugs and some antisocial behaviour such as prostitution and crime (UNODC 2004). Illicit drug users are likely to participate in criminal activities such as burglary or sell sex to obtain enough money for buying their drug of interest. Therefore, singling Iran out in the world and magnifying a minor problem in Iran such as temporary marriage as a widespread practice and a challenging problem for women in Iran is overlooking the strong family ties in Iranian culture while at the same time the audience forgets the routine practice of casual relationships, under age sex or one- night-stands in most countries.
Overall, there are two perceptions of Iran with a huge gap between: one is the perception Iranians have of themselves, and the other is how Western audience perceive Iran and Iranians. The material SBS broadcast about Iran is far away from what the majority of Iranians can identify with. It is a version that at best represents a minority of Iranians. We urge SBS to adopt a balanced approach in its depiction of Iran to give a more reasonable and accurate image of this nation in all its complexity."

So far so good. We are close to ISSI 2005 conference (10th International Conference of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics, Stockholm). As far as I know so far the participation of four Iranian information professionals is confirmed including Ms Ossareh, and 3 PhD students . This is great. I think the bibliometics and webometrics related studies is the field in which Iranian information professionals are most active internationally. Good luck to all of them.

Cybernetics

A translated article about cybernetics in Tadbir. Fortunately some Iranian journals like Tabir and Rahyaft are full text available online. this article that is published in Tadbir apparently was edited by tadbir editors. Though the translators don't mind, but this indicates that their editorship is not good enough. They have removed the bibliographic information of the original articles and the references, they have cut about 800 words from the article, it is not clear that where the translator's editor finishes and the article itself begins because they have removed some of the subtitles. And .. There are some misspellings in the text (particularly name of the translator which is a shame!) though they have received e-copy as well as hard copy. But anyway, Tadbir is a general journal in the field of management not a scientific journal. I am not sure if there is any difference betwen their hard copy and e-copy.

مراجعین پس از آنکه در فهرست کتابخانه کتاب مورد نظر خود را یافتند، روی گزینه ای در کنار کتاب یا مجله ای که قصد درخواست دارند کلیک می کنند و فرمی را پر می کنند که در آن تاریخی مورد نظر خود برای دریافت و مطالعه کتاب، تالاری (و شماره صندلی) که مایلند در آن کتاب را مطالعه کنند را مشخص می کنند. این امکان وجود دارد که اقلامی را برای چند روز بعد سفارش داد (این کار را با تلفن یا ایمیل نیز می توان کرد). اگر ماده مورد نظر برای همان روز درخواست شود، معمولاً تحویل آن بین 1 تا 2 ساعت طول می کشد. بر روی میز هر خواننده یک چراغ قرمز کوچک قرار دارد که هنگامی که اقلام مورد درخواست وی از مخزن به میز امانت رسید و برای تحویل به وی آماده بود، توسط میز امانت روشن می شود به این معنی که خواننده می تواند برای دریافت آن اقلام به میز امانت مراجعه کند. این چراغ اگر توسط خواننده خاموش نشود پس از 90 دقیقه به صورت اتوماتیک خاموش می شود. زمانی که خواننده فرم درخواست را روی کامپیوتر در تالار مطالعه تکمیل کرده و ارسال می کند. کتابداران داخل مخزن آن را دریافت می کنند و بر روی برگه ای به شکل زیر چاپ می کنند. این برگه دارای بارکدی است که فرایند تحویل کتاب را ساده می کند. در مواردی که ماده مورد درخواست به دلیلی مثلاً گم شدن در مخزن وجود نداشته و کتابخانه نتواند آنرا به خواننده بدهد بر روی این برگه توضیح لازم را می نویسد تا میز امانت به خواننده علت ناتوانی کتابخانه در ارائه ماده را به متقاضی اعلام کند. مراجعه کننده می تواند این برگه را نگه دارد. در عکس فوق می توانید توضیخ "missing" را ببینید.

Iranian movies in Australia

Most of people get information about other countries through what they watch on T.V. So, it is not surprising that many people in Australia think that Iran is a very poor country without modern technologies even without electricity. As I have noticed, almost all of Iranian movies which has been broadcasted in Australia show poverty, misery,...among people in Iran. Although these movies are very well designed and have got so many national and international prizes, showing just the one side of the coin makes very negative image about Iran among foreign people. For example the public library close to my home has these 2 Iranian movies which as you may know are in the above category:

-A time for drunk horses
Recently, the worst movie about Iran -prostitution behind the veil- was broadcasted through Australian TV. It was terrible and unreal. I am sure they select this kind of movies deliberately.

National library of Scotland

Though Scotland is a part of Great Britain, it's got its own National Library. Before I had a travel to Edinburgh I didn't consider Scotland as a proper country!. I always used to consider it just as a part of UK. But they have their own sense of nationality, flag, TV (BBC Scotland) and money (Scotish poud is different from British pound in terms of design, but it can be spent in UK and it's got the same value). Scotland national library is open just to its members and it is not like British Library that tourist can visit it.

اصولاً کتابخانه بریتانیا به عنوان یک کتابخانه ملی کتابها را امانت نمی دهد اما اعضا می توانند تمامی مواد کتابخانه را در تالارهای قرائت کتابخانه مطالعه کنند. کتابخانه داری چندین تالار مطالعه است که مبنای تقسیم بندی آنها موضوعی و نیز بر اساس نوع مواد است از جمله تالارهای نسخ خطی، کتب نادر، نقشه ها، تالار علوم، علوم انسانی و از این قبیل. در داخل هر تالار قدری از منابع مرتبط (عموماً مرجع) به صورت قفسه باز در دسترس است. استفاده از بعضی چیزها نظیر ماژیک هایلات کردن در تالارها ممنوع است. هر میز مطالعه دارای یک چراغ مطالعه، یک پریز برق برای استفاده از کامپیوتر لپ تاپ و یک چراغ کوچک مربوط به میز امانت است. همچنین در طراحی این میزها امکانات لازم برای توسعه های آینده نظیر اتصال اینترنت در نظر گرفته شده است. مراجعین اجازه ندارند باخود کیف دستی یا کوله پشتی یا هر نوع کیفی از این قبیل به داخل تالارها ببرند. اما بردن کامپیوتر لپ تاپ، لوازم تحریر و کتاب و مجلات شخصی به داخل تالارها مجاز است. مراجعین برای حمل این اقلام به داخل تالارها از کیسه های نایلونی شفافی (تصویر زیر) استفاده می کننند که به تعداد فراوان در رخت کن وجود دارند. مراجعین موظف هستند هنگام ورود به تالار کارت عضویت خود را عرضه کنند و هنگام خروج از تالار نیز مامور جلوی درب، کتابها و لوازم شخصی آنها را وارسی می کند تا مبادا کتاب یا مجله ای از تالار خارج شود یا اینکه کسی صفحه ای از کتابی را پاره کرده و خارج کند (اما بازرسی بدنی قاعدتاً درکار نیست).

همانطور که گفته بودم مطالبی را در ارتباط با کتابخانه بریتانیا خواهم نوشت. اولین مسئله عضویت در این کتابخانه عظیم است که به سادگی و در مدت زمانی کوتاه در حدود 10 دقیقه انجام می شود و فرد همان لحظه کارت عضویت خود را دریافت کرده و می تواند بلافاصله از آن استفاده کند. سرعت انجام مراحل ثبت نام در کتابخانه ای که مراجعین جهانی دارد بسیار ضروری است. به عنوان مثال تمام دانشگاهیان و دانشجویان تحصیلات تکمیلی به سادگی می توانند عضو کتابخانه شوند. با در داشتن مدارک لازم (به عنوان مثال کارت دانشجویی، یک گواهی آدرس مثل قبض تلفن و کارت شناسایی) فرد به واحد ثبت نام کتابخانه مراجعه می کند و پس از مصاحبه ای کوتاب با یکی از کارمندان، خود مشخصات فردی خود را وارد یکی از رایانه های مستقر در واحد ثبت نام می کند. سپس کارمند این اطلاعات را جهت اطمینان از درستی آنها به همراه خود فرد مرور می کند و با یک دوربین دیجیتال از متقاضی عکس می گیرد و کارت شناسایی را بلافاصله چاپ می کند. کل این مراحل حدود 5 تا 10 دقیقه طول می کشد.

I spent 3 weeks in Iran and I used dial-up internet a bit. I was a little sad about the speed of internet connection in iran since broadband is easily available for common people in most of developed countries. apart from the connection speed, the more disappointing thing was the censorship. government is controling the contect very strictly and many political sites are not accessible in Iran. for example even this page on BBC farsi website about women in Azadi stadium was unaccessible by 3 different internet services i tried.

یک - برای شروع تحصیل در دانشگاه های استرالیا شما باید دست کم نمره شش از آزمون

و یا معادل آن از تافل داشته باشید. برای برخی رشته ها یا دانشگاه ها این میزان شش و نیم است. اگر دانشجوی دکترا هستید نمره ی نگارش شما هم باید هفت باشد

دو – برای شرکت در آزمون زبان با واحد آزمون زبان اداره بورس تماس بگیرید

سه – اگر پول به اندازه کافی دارید و مشکل سربازی و مانند آن ندارید می توانید از یکی از دانشگاههای استرالیا پذیرش سه تا شش ماهه برای تحصیل در دوره زبان بگیرید. این کار در بین جوانان سایر کشورها بسیار رایج است و هم فال است و تماشا و هم زبان آموزی و آشنایی با دانشگاه. در پایان دوره می توانید در همانجا امتحان زبان بدهید و منتظر نتیجه بمانید. اگر کمتر از شش میلیون تومان پول بیکار دارید هرگز این روش را امتحان نکنید. اسم برخی مراکز مهم زبان آموزی ذکر خواهد شد. سایت آنها را ببینید و بعد از اطلاع از شرایط به آنها ای میل بزنید و تقاضای تحصیل در دوره زبان کنید و آدرس پستی خود را بدهید تا فرم های ثبت نام برایتان ارسال شود

راهنمای تحصیل در استرالیا – بخش نخست

نکته های کلیدی

دوستان زیادی کم و بیش خواستار دریافت اطلاعاتی در باره تحصیل و کار در استرالیا هستند. نظام آموزش عالی استرالیا تا حدودی به سیستم خود ما شباهت دارد و در عین حال تفاوت های بارزی نیز دارد. از این رو به همه دوستان ایرانی سفارش می کنم پیش از گزینش استرالیا گزینه های گوناگونی را به دقت مورد بررسی قرار دهند

یک – دانشگاههای استرالیا همگی شهریه دریافت می کنند و یک دانشجوی غیر استرالیایی هزینه ای بسیار بیشتر از دانشجویان بومی می پردازد

دو – یک دانشجوی تمام وقت خارجی می تواند حداکثر بیست ساعت در هفته کار کند. با توجه به اینکه جمعیت بسیار زیادی از جوانان کشورهای شرق آسیا و بویژه چین در استرالیا پراکنده اند یافتن کارهای پاره وقت برای دانشجویان سایر کشورها بسیار دشوار است و نمی توان به امید یافتن کار و در آوردن خرج تحصیل به استرالیا آمد. کارهایی هم که یافت می شود عمدتا شامل کار در رستوران ها و ساندویچی هاست که نیاز به تسلط به زبان انگلیسی و پاسخگویی به مخاطبان دارد. معمولا یافتن کار تخصصی در رشته خود در دو سال اول تحصیلات غیر ممکن است. از این رو توصیه می کنم پیش از آمدن به استرالیا از داشتن هزینه کافی برای زندگی مطمئن شوید

Blogging and LIS scholars

While surfing the internet I came across with two interesting blogs. One of them was from the education field and another from the communication field. The interesting aspect of these blogs is that their authors are famous professors in their field. Reading these blogs was very informative even for me from a different field. They update the students' knowledge with following developments in the field and publish their own ideas. The language they use is easy and understandable. Why LIS scholars don't have such blogs? why our proffessors don't blog? Although there are many LIS students who have created a blog, but most of them give information rather than knowledge. We need a voice from the upper level. The increasing number of LIS journals, both print and electronic, is a good chance for us. But, the fast growth of knowledge in the LIS field, requires more speed to disseminate. On the other hand, writing a formal paper takes time and there is a risk of losing some other ideas which don't fit the whole paper.I remember one of my teachers who is very update and knowledgeable. I was lucky to be his student but all the time I was thinking oh, I wish he could put his information and thoughts in books and papers to share with other LIS students. But I am sure that he never could do it through his very busy life. Now, we have a very good tool as weblog to share ideas. Obviously, LIS teachers have so many ideas to share with us. There are other advantages for blogging. Better communication, promoting LIS among other people, current awareness for LIS students, etc. So, I strongly ask LIS scholars to blog.

London Book Fair 2005 (2)

There was not even one sqare meter more space to sell to the publishers. it was the first time in the history of the book fair since 1971 that all of the places availale were sold out. The fair is to be housed in a new large place next year called ExCell.
There was not any Iranian Publisher in the fair as exhibitor. I met some Iranian publishers who had come as visitor to check the new books and choose for translation.

I visited London internation book fair 2005 yesterday. these are some fresh photo from the fair. I will write about the fair later if i find some times. It is completely different from Tehran book fair in respects of its functions.

A lot of seats for sitting and chatting. Penguin group has got 10.6% share of UK publishing market. New Zeland and Australia were market focus of 2005 fair. I.B Tauris has published a lot of book about Iran.

As you see in some of these pictures, there are many seats avaiable in the fair for sitting and chatting with other people and discussing the business.

Have you ever think about the ongoing impacts of English language on information access. English is now the dominated language of information world. About 80% of internet web pages are in this language. Main information resources are mostly published in this language or translated into it. Librarians also may benefit more from the advantages of English as a common language to communicate with their co- workers or participate in knowledge sharing activities. Many standard guidelines have been written in this language that would help libraries cooperation programmes and facilitate international flow of information. It is a key element for LIS student’s success both in their studies and career. If you look at the result of master entrance exams in our country, you can see that those who have better knowledge of this language would be more successful in the exam.I wonder, however, why it has not been looked at as an important topic of our profession. What do you think about it and its future?

Increasing the number of Iranian students in Australian universities

Australia has the third largest number of international students in the English-speaking world behind the USA and UK. Statistics revealed that there has been a significant increase over last year in the number of middle East countries from UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq and Jordan looking at Australia as a chosen destination for higher education.
Last week there was a "postgraduate welcome barbeque" in RMIT. It was as an orientation session for the new postgraduate students. In that ceremony I was surprised with meeting 10 new Iranian students. Due to Australian universities advertising in Iran, the number of Iranian students has increased in most of these universities. Although, this makes me happy to have more people from my home country, people in Iran should pay more attention to the economic issues in Australia. From last year till now, the universities tuition fee has increased up to 25%. Public transport's fare has increased at least 15% from last year till now. This inflation is not limited to these two items. It includes most of goods and services. Just have a look at "Australian Bureau of Statistics"

Muslims in Melbourne

It seems that multiculturalism is one of the common characteristics among English speaking countries. In their big cities you can find people from almost all over the world. This diversity makes them comfortable. In Melbourne, I have never felt that I am a forigner. It is interesting that "where are you from?" is the first question in establishing a conversation. There are few people who are originally from Australia.

Being as a muslim is not a problem here. There are many muslims from different countries. There is a big and very nice prayer room in the university. At first time, I was surprised when I couldn't find "Mohr" for praying in the prayer room. It is because most of muslims are Sunni. Some of them don't know anything about Shi'e. I remember that day which a Sumalian girl asked me "if you are muslim why you pray in a different way?". In festivals and ceremanies, the university provides Halal foods for muslims. People from different nationalities and religins live close to each other friendly and respect various beliefs. They have have special places and facilities to carry on their religious or national ceremonies. However, the important thing is that nobody can exceed from his/her borders and this is why all religions and cultures can survive without any problems.

Iranian web sites

Imagine that you are desperately looking for some information and the only resource that you think you have access and can find information in is web site, and then instead of some useful information you find some unuseful information or even worse you find some funny stuff. Last week for a reason I needed some information about some Iranian companies, and I though I might be able to find them on internet on their web sites. I checked web sites of some ministries and some of the biggest Iranian companies and I was almost disappointed. I found many problems. Some of them have problem with being downloaded, some of them are not compatible with different browsers, some webmasters and web site designers are unfortunately very keen on using flash files and animations. Besides all of these technical problems I just realised that in Iran companies and governmental organizations consider having a website as a kind of luxury not a necessity. Therefore you cannot find up-to-date useful information. I hope some master students in computer science and LIS do some research on this topic and write some papers in newspapers to attract attention of the people in charge to this issue.

Overseas Students' Difficulties -2

English as a second language

I wrote previously about the problems of studying in overseas (here). Loneliness and losing the relationship with other people was described. The second important issue is the language. We have been learning English for a long time in our previous studies. Starting just after the primary school, we were taught English for seven years during our school education. In undergraduate programs, English is one of the courses all students have to attend and once again we had a close relation with English in our postgraduate studies.

Altogether, we have been learning English as a second language for, at least, 10 years in Iran. After such a long time, one would hope to have a good knowledge of English. However, as you know, our language-teaching system is not perfect and usually the English programs concentrate on grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension, rather than everyday conversation and communication skills.

As an example, imagine two Iranian people learning English in different situations. The first one has been taught English as a part of his/her school and academic education and the second one has been living in an English-speaking country during the same time and has learnt English through working and living with native speakers. The first person is probably perfect in English grammar, comprehension, translation and even writing, however the second one will be more fluent in his/her day to day communication, listening and speaking.

Most overseas research students are similar with the first case. We can read and understand English books and journals – especially in the field of LIS. Usually we can translate English articles in Persian and maybe we write in English correctly. But we have many difficulties in listening and speaking English – two important communicational skills. Three to five years completing a Ph.D. in an English-speaking country forces us to improve our fluency in English. We need to communicate with people in their own language to meet our daily living needs. Shopping, travel, health care, recreation and education are major areas in which we should speak with people in English.

In summary, there are few opportunities for international research students to improve their English speaking skill through daily communications. Whether our Offer is conditional or not, personally I think it is useful and even necessary for all research students to attend in a suitable English course at least for one month immediately after arriving to the host country. Language learning must be more difficult for our friends in the non-English speaking countries such as France and Denmark because they have to learn a new language plus English.

I have already written a post about RSS in this weblog. It is more than one month that I'm using Mozila FireFox instead of Internet Explorer and I am quite happy with it. It is much better than IE. Today I shifted from Outlook to Mozila Thunderbird. This email client is as cool as Firefox. I discovered a new world. Besides that you can deal with your emails and manage them easily with Thunderbird, it supports RSS feed which makes the life much easier for you.

You don't have to check some websites several times a day. You can create as many RSS accounts as you want and recieve update of your favourite websites whenever it is released. Fortunately most of famous websites and weblogs support RSS feed. BBC started this service recently for Farsi news. You can recieve news and post from BBC English, BBC Farsi, Yahoo and so on, or in the field of LIS you can recieve new posts from Open Access weblog and a couple of other weblogs. I strongly recommend your using Thunderbird. Try it, you'll enjoy it.

Google Scholar Again

I just did a search in Google Scholar and I found that it could be very useful. By checking the results of my search I found out by chance that I have full-text access to some materials that I thought I didn’t. For example I just realised that I have full-text access to JASIST back to 1986 while I always used to think that my access is limited to issues after 2001.

Also I found out that Google Scholar will break some boundaries that inhibit interdisciplinary use of scholarly articles. For example we librarians and information scientists usually search LISA or ISA for our research purposes and think that they suffice us. But if you do your search in Google Scholar as well, you might found (as I did) some very useful and pertinent materials in the other areas like computer science or in some general resources Like the Science Magazine that we usually never check. I feel that Google Scholar works like a Federated Search Engine!

Online Information 2004

Online Information 2004 exhibition was held from 30 Nov-2 Dec in Olympia Grand Hall in London. There were more than 100 free seminars and presentations available and about 250 exhibitors participated. There were some good news in the exhibitions. for example some more informaiton is to be available free on the web including all UK trade statistics and European Union statistics that will be available free on the web with search facilities from January 2005. Some new products were introduced like Scopus from Elsevier which is quite different from other databases in that it presents the results of the search with a new style and within new categories. The other interesting phenomenon which could be observed in the exhibition was the number of companies which provide services and applications for managing the access to electronic resources.

Basic units in Library and Information science

13 days ago, ASIS & T annual meeting 2004 was finished. During conference period, November 12- 17, about 90 papers were presented in different issues: Disciplinary issues, Digital libraries, Information organization, User behavior, System design and Knowledge management and use. One of the interesting presented papers in this annual meeting was Professor Birger Hjorland’s presentation with the title of: “ Basic units in library and information science”. This paper, to some extent, answers questions that have raised, for years, controversies in Library and information science (LIS).
In this presentation, Birger discusses about the lack of a clear terminology in LIS:

“Often “knowledge organization” (KO), “information retrieval” (IR)
and “information seeking” are considered core areas within Library and
Information Science (LIS)”. This terminology suggests that the “units”

In another place (slide 11 )(http://www.db.dk/bh/Units%20in%20IS_B.ppt) he argues for changes that have been made in LIS terminology:

“Some changes in terminology are related to theoretical influences.
Other changes are just related to trends or fashions. …Webber (2003), for
example, suggests that many courses in information science change their
name to information management (but not their content) because “management”
is a more popular term among students selecting courses.”

For this reason, in my opinion, some persons make some mistakes. For examples, I read a message from Maryam in this weblog about LIS courses that are given by other institutes out of LIS departments. It seems that while they have common names such as knowledge management and some things like this, the content is completely different from LIS, as I have experienced it. There fore, it demands rethinking about terminologies that we have in LIS and as mentioned by Birger there is a need for terminology in LIS.

Internet for users of British Library

British library started testing a new service some months ago and now it is finally available. Users can access wireless internet with their laptops in all eleven reading rooms and cafe and resturaunt of the library. In the begining it was free but now users have to pay on the pay-as-you-go basis.

Last week the Intenational Conference of Web Information System Engineering (WISE 04)was hold in Brisbane. My supervisor was one of the program committee co-chairs and I attended it for 3 days. It was very interesting to see how an international conference is managed easily and simply without any extra audience or costs. The manager of Microsoft Asia Research Center presented a keynote speech about the future of search engines.

MSN is working hard to catch the Google position and they have a big program to cover everything. New issues in Web searching are:

The Social image of the information professionals

One of the member of IFLA knowledge management mailing list is working on "the social image of the information professionals" in different countries. Today, I got an email from a USA librarian reflecting this issue there. I felt that there are similarities between Iran and Amercia about this topic. Have a look at that email:
What are your thoughts on the way that the information professional isperceived in your country?. Can be it considered a positive perception?
In the US I believe that perceptions of information professionals are beginning to be viewed with more professional status than they were even 10 years ago. I also think that terminology makes a difference...thereseems to be a difference whether you say informational professional orlibrarian. An IP may conjure up a more technical based individual, where librarian still brings to mind the stereotypical librarian image.
- Does it exist some of the clichés about librarians, exposedpreviously, in your country?
Yes, I think so. When people say they are a librarian they immediately think of someone with their hair in a bun...with glasses...with sensible shoes. Sometimes comments will be jokingly made that "youdon't look like a librarian," or will make a joke about the stereotype.But, it does seem to be getting better. I think many people think oflibrarians in terms of a clerk position.
- Do you think that your profession is not sufficiently valued, from administration, companies, cultural organizations, or I+D institutions?
I think for the range of positions we hold that we could probably be valued better, as a whole, although individually I think for the people who use our services, they understand our worth. Institutionally, there is most likely room for improvement. I know that in many of the larger businesses that have typically hired librarians and IP, it is usually one of the first jobs to be cut if they are downsizing. On the otherhand, there are many information-based companies who seek outindividuals with a MLS or MLIS degree because it is very valued.The view of the profession has greatly improved, but still has a long way to go to be regarded in the same esteem as other professionaldegrees and careers, such as engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc.

One of the supports that CILIP provides for its members is publication of Library and Information Gazette which is a biweekly periodical containing job vacancies information as well as CILIP news and some other useful information. Its job advertisements section is very selective and informative. Unfortunately the LIS job market in Iran is monopolized by the government and national LIS society cannot play a major role in the market because of its very nature. I mention some library job salaries here, then you can get a picture of the status of the librarians in the job market: (salary is per year)
system librarian: 24000-30000£
assistant librarian: 19000-29000£
library service manager: 30000£
cataloguer: 18000-20000£
these are just some examle and the salary can differe accroding to the employer and also employees' qualifications and skills.

Google Scholar: New Service for Scientists and Scholars

Google Scholar enables researchers to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the Web.

Just type an author’s name in the search box often works. If you've authored a number of articles and want to narrow your results, use an "author:" prefix. For example, author:Parsi. To find your articles on a given topic, add relevant keywords to the search. E.g., author:Parsi "Aircraft Detection".
You can combine "author:" command with other commands such as "site:", or "allintitle:". For example:
allintitle:"Semantic Web" site:fr

for Iranian students

Sometimes I get emails from Iranian undergraduate students of LIS that are interested to continue their studies. They ask about the resources and any other advice to success.

Frankly, because I attended in Masters Entrance Exams about 8-9 years ago (time is going very fast!) I don’t have many things to tell them. However, usually I recommend them to read some books carefully among them Estelahname-ye Ketabdari should be read and understood entry by entry – I think so. This is a good opportunity to put our recommendations and experiences here (in Persian and English); then other Iranian students can read them.

Recently, I have received 2 emails from Iran in them Iranian LIS students have asked how they can study overseas or use scholarship opportunities. I think we must write something here for such questions.

Archival studies

You might have noticed that at least in UK the departments of informaiton studies tend to merge with departments of computer studies. on the other hand now most of the Archival studies departments have found their nest in the faculties or schools of historical studies. I reckon LIS is in a transition era in that it will have a more clear identity and a more stable position in academia in near future.

PLoS Medicine Vs. the Lancet

I have already written about Open Access movement in scholarly journal publishing in this weblog. The Lancet is probably the most famous journal in the field of medicine and one of most prestigious . Recently Public Library of Science (PLoS) launched a new open access journal named "Medicine" . it is to be the first open access rival to The Lancet which is published by Elsevier. PLoS Medicine has already absorbed some of the famous experts as its editorial team and some of them in fact are former editors of Lancet. I hope this movement in Open access publishing continues because it has a great benefit for developing world.

Mongolians

Recently I read in Information World Review that Mongolia has recently been persuading its citizens to adopt surnames, in order to make possible all manner of modern services for them – identity cards, credit cards etc. It will probably have some effects on their cataloguing system as it affects the way in which names are arranged in entries of catalogues. Serjee, a director of the State Central Library of Mongolia, has written a guide on how to choose a good family name. For example Gurragchaa, the only Mongolian who has gone to space with ex-USSR space rockets chose Cosmos as his surname. So far, too many Mongolians have been taking the easy option of choosing Borjigin –the clan name of Chengiz Khan. I remember my father told me that at the time of Reza Shah how officials of registry used to go to villages and choose surname for people according to what they were known for. Some of surnames that don’t look nice today have their roots in that procedures in that simple rural environment. For instance they chose Tas-kolah (bowl-hat) for somebody who used to put a bowl on his head like a hat. Then they didn't care so much about the meaning of the surname because everybody knew everybody in that village anyway, but now Tas-kolah would be having difficult times!!
